Veep Naana Opoku-Agyemang Assures Passage of Civil Society Regulation Bill

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Reaffirms Commitment to Civil Society Bill
Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the passage of the long-awaited Civil Society (Non-Profit) Bill. The bill is designed to regulate and strengthen the operations of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across the country, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and impact.
Speaking at the Ghana Civil Society Forum held in Accra, Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the need for a robust legal framework to support the growth and sustainability of CSOs. She noted that civil society plays an essential role in advancing democracy, promoting good governance, and driving national development, and therefore deserves a solid regulatory foundation.

“For civil society to thrive and play its crucial role in national development, there must be a strong legal framework to guide and protect its work,” the Vice President stated. “The government is fully committed to creating an enabling environment where CSOs can contribute meaningfully to our democratic and development goals.”
The Civil Society Forum, a two-day event organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society leaders, government officials, and international development partners. The forum served as a platform to discuss critical challenges facing the non-profit sector and to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration between government and civil society.
Participants called for timely passage of the bill, improved funding mechanisms, and stronger safeguards to protect CSOs’ independence and operations. Many agreed that a well-regulated and empowered civil society sector is key to achieving inclusive development and holding public institutions accountable.
The Vice President’s assurance signals renewed momentum toward formalizing support for CSOs through legislation, a move welcomed by sector leaders and advocates nationwide.
