Residents Cry for Help Over Collapsing Asunafo–Bibiani Bridge

Residents in Asunafo South Demand Urgent Repairs on Collapsing Bridge Linking Ahafo and Western North Regions

Residents of three farming communities in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region are urgently calling for the rehabilitation of a dangerously deteriorated bridge that connects them to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality in the Western North Region.

The bridge, which spans the River Asawine, serves as the only access route for the communities of Asawineso, Adwumam, and Asante Nkae. Its current state, however, has been described by locals as a “death trap” and a severe threat to lives and livelihoods.

In interviews with Adom News, residents voiced fears over the bridge’s fragility, stressing that it has become increasingly hazardous—especially during the rainy season when it is often submerged or weakened by floodwaters.

“This bridge is our lifeline. It connects us to Bibiani where we access hospitals, schools, and markets. But now, it’s a death trap. We fear it could collapse at any time,” one resident lamented.

The crumbling infrastructure not only endangers daily commutes but also disrupts the transport of farm produce, limits access to healthcare, and restricts school attendance for children in the affected communities.

Residents revealed that when the bridge becomes impassable, they are forced to take perilous routes, including wading through the river—an option that becomes deadly during heavy rains.

The affected communities are appealing to their Member of Parliament, Eric Opoku, and the District Chief Executive, Benjamin Yinkah, to prioritize the construction of a permanent, safer bridge. They argue that fixing the bridge will restore economic activities, improve emergency access, and strengthen regional connectivity.

Without prompt intervention, residents warn that the risk of fatalities and economic stagnation will continue to rise, especially as the rainy season intensifies.
