MP Ntim Fordjour Criticizes Viral Same-Sex Kiss at Independence Arch, Links It to NDC Leadership

Assin South MP Slams Same-Sex Couple’s Kiss at Independence Arch, Blames Mahama and NDC
Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has condemned a viral photo of a same-sex couple kissing beneath Ghana’s iconic Independence Arch, describing the act as a desecration of a revered national monument and a direct affront to the country’s cultural and moral values.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, June 26, Rev. Fordjour did not mince words, holding former President John Dramani Mahama and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) responsible for what he called a growing erosion of traditional values. He accused the NDC of encouraging LGBTQ+ advocacy through what he sees as permissive leadership.
“Under Mahama & NDC, foreign gay couple boldly desecrate our national monuments: kiss under Independence Square, flaunting Ghana flag. They’re emboldened to defy the dignity and sanctity of our rich Ghanaian values right before our eyes,” the MP tweeted.
The controversy erupted after South African LGBTQ+ couple Lue and Rue shared images of themselves kissing at Ghana’s Independence Arch. The photos were part of their #ShowGhanaLove campaign, which aims to promote inclusivity and challenge Ghana’s pending anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
The couple’s peaceful protest, however, has triggered a wave of public backlash, especially among conservative Ghanaians who view their gesture as culturally insensitive. Critics argue that using such a symbolic landmark for LGBTQ+ activism undermines national heritage.
Rev. Fordjour’s comments reflect growing sentiment among lawmakers and cultural advocates pushing for the swift passage of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill. He stressed that incidents like this highlight the urgency of reinforcing the country’s moral framework through legislation.
“We shall end this absurdity with the bill,” he declared, referring to the highly anticipated anti-LGBTQ+ legislation currently under parliamentary review.
The proposed bill, officially titled the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy in Ghana. The legislation has drawn both domestic support and international criticism, with global human rights organizations warning that it violates basic freedoms.
Despite the international outcry, several lawmakers, including Rev. Fordjour, remain firm in their belief that the bill is necessary to safeguard Ghanaian cultural values and prevent what they see as external moral influence.
As the debate continues, the Independence Arch incident has reignited national discourse around LGBTQ+ rights, cultural identity, and the tension between freedom of expression and national values.
