Match-Fixing Concerns Rise as Young Apostles Coach Accuses Referees of Controlling GPL Results

Young Apostles FC Coach William Afoakwa Alleges Referees and Club Owners Decide Ghana Premier League Results
Head coach of Young Apostles FC, William Afoakwa, has made explosive claims regarding the integrity of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), alleging that referees and club owners—not coaches—ultimately determine the outcome of matches. His comments have intensified ongoing concerns over transparency and fairness in Ghanaian top-flight football.
Speaking during an interview with Sikka FM, Afoakwa expressed frustration with what he describes as a deeply flawed system that undermines the role of coaches and compromises the competitive integrity of the GPL.
“In the Ghana Premier League, we coaches are just following the team. It’s the club owners and referees who determine the results,” Afoakwa stated, hinting at behind-the-scenes influences that affect match results.
These statements add fuel to the growing criticisms about officiating standards in the league. Over the years, the Ghana Premier League has struggled with allegations of match-fixing, poor referee decisions, and administrative interference—issues that have significantly eroded public trust in the competition. Afoakwa’s remarks echo the frustrations of many football fans and stakeholders who have called for reforms in the officiating system.
Despite these challenges, Young Apostles FC—a debutant in the top-flight league—managed to survive their maiden season in the GPL. The club secured 14th place on the league table with 40 points, thanks to a balanced record of 10 wins, 10 draws, and 14 losses. Their ability to avoid relegation in a fiercely competitive environment reflects the team’s resilience and determination.
The Yellow and Blues, as they are affectionately known, are now setting their sights on the upcoming 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. Preparations are already underway, with plans to strengthen the squad and improve performance. The club is expected to make key signings and develop a more consistent tactical approach under the guidance of Coach Afoakwa.
As calls for greater fairness and professionalism in Ghana football grow louder, Afoakwa’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address officiating controversies and promote transparent governance within the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
With more stakeholders speaking out, the future of the Ghana Premier League may depend on its ability to restore credibility and ensure a level playing field for all clubs.
