Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas has shared glowing remarks about her working experience with renowned filmmaker Shirley Frimpong Manso, describing her as a passionate perfectionist who brings out the best in her cast and crew.
In an interview with Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Joselyn debunked claims that Shirley is difficult to work with, emphasizing that her high standards stem from a deep commitment to the craft.
“She doesn’t work with people who are disinterested in the craft,” Joselyn stated. “She’s quite professional and very passionate, so if you don’t come in with that same attitude, then she fails as a director as well.”
According to the actress, Shirley’s insistence on excellence may be misinterpreted as being hard, but it simply reflects her drive for perfection.
“If you want to call that hard, then she knows what she wants. She’s a perfectionist and won’t compromise on her standards. As an actor, your job is to know your lines—once you do that, you leave the rest to the director,” she added.
Joselyn also noted that Shirley often gets frustrated when actors are unprepared, particularly when they don’t know their lines. “You only have one job. When you don’t do it, it frustrates her and makes it difficult for her to direct,” she explained.
Drawing a comparison, Dumas likened working on Shirley’s set to being in a classroom, emphasizing that each project offers a fresh and rewarding challenge.
“Anytime you’re on Shirley’s set, it’s almost like you’re back in school. She brings something new and refreshing every time.”
Joselyn concluded by calling Shirley one of the easiest directors to work with, provided the actor is well-prepared and willing to collaborate as a team.
