Ex-MMDCEs Push for Voting Rights in NPP, Petition Party Leadership

Former NPP MMDCEs Petition Party for Voting Rights in Internal Elections

A group of former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling on the party’s leadership to grant them voting rights in all internal elections. The group has submitted a formal petition to the NPP’s National Council, urging the party to broaden its electoral college to foster greater inclusivity and democratic engagement.

The petition, dated June 12, was signed by former Gomoa East MP, Solomon Darko-Quarm, and former Achiase DCE, Richmond Amponsah. Copies of the letter were sent to all Regional Chairmen and the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

According to the petitioners, extending voting rights to former MMDCEs would be a recognition of their significant contributions to the party over the years. They argue that giving them a seat at the decision-making table would boost morale, encourage active participation, and strengthen internal party democracy.

“Extending voting rights to MMDCEs at all levels would serve as a significant motivation for them to contribute more to the party’s growth and success,” the petition reads.

The group emphasized that former MMDCEs possess valuable experience, local knowledge, and networks, which the party can leverage—especially now, with the NPP in opposition. They believe their inclusion in internal voting processes would not only strengthen the party base but also provide much-needed financial and logistical support at the grassroots level as the NPP gears up for the 2028 general elections.

Historical Contributions Highlighted
The petitioners also highlighted the key roles MMDCEs have played in past electoral victories, particularly referencing their involvement in the NPP’s 2016 landslide win. Many former MMDCEs, they noted, had previously served as constituency and regional party officers, offering both strategic and operational support during campaigns.

They argue that this track record demonstrates their ongoing relevance and loyalty to the party, making their participation in internal elections both fair and beneficial.

Strengthening Party Unity Ahead of 2028
With the party currently regrouping in opposition, the former MMDCEs believe it is the right time to reassess internal structures and promote unity by engaging all committed members. Their request aligns with broader calls within the NPP for electoral reforms that ensure every contributing member has a voice.

As the NPP looks toward 2028, the inclusion of experienced leaders like former MMDCEs could play a crucial role in mobilizing support, rebuilding grassroots strength, and securing electoral victory.
