Dr. Bryan Acheampong Officially Declares Intent to Contest NPP Presidential Primaries

Bryan Acheampong Engages Key Stakeholders Ahead of 2028 NPP Flagbearer Bid

Abetifi Member of Parliament and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has commenced consultations with key stakeholders as he prepares to formally declare his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Acheampong, a prominent figure within the NPP, met with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana as part of his stakeholder engagement strategy. During the meeting, he officially communicated his presidential ambitions, emphasizing the importance of informing the church leadership before making a public declaration.

“As a proud product of the Presbyterian Church, it would go against my tradition if the Moderator of the Church were to hear about my political intentions through the media,” he told journalists after the meeting. “A decision has been made that I will contest when the party officially opens nominations. But before that, I deemed it necessary to inform the church.”

Dr. Acheampong revealed that the decision to run for the NPP flagbearership came after a comprehensive nationwide consultation conducted by his exploratory team. The team engaged party delegates across Ghana to assess the level of grassroots support and gather feedback on his potential candidacy.

“The feedback from delegates and party stakeholders was encouraging and formed the basis for my decision,” he said. “I am committed to serving the party and country, and I believe this is the right time to step forward.”

In response, the Presbyterian Church leadership offered prayers and moral support for Dr. Acheampong, encouraging him on the path he has chosen.

Even before the official announcement, several former NPP Members of Parliament and former government officials have thrown their weight behind Dr. Acheampong’s presidential ambition, signaling growing momentum within the party ranks.

His entry into the flagbearer race sets the stage for a competitive contest, with other notable aspirants already in the race. These include Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, as well as outspoken former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong. The NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026.

As the race intensifies, Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s early stakeholder engagements position him as a serious contender with a clear strategy to build consensus and rally support ahead of the official nomination process.
