Fatal Crash at Nkawkaw Oframase: One Dead, 22 Injured in Accra-Kumasi Highway Collision

A devastating road accident at Nkawkaw Oframase on the Accra–Kumasi highway has resulted in one fatality and left 22 others critically injured. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, involved a head-on collision between a Kia Granbird bus (registration number GR 2399-15) and a Kia Rhino truck (registration number GW 2285-11).

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where several victims were found trapped inside the wreckage. The Kwahu West Municipal Fire Commander, DO II Samuel Mante, confirmed that fire and rescue personnel had to use special equipment to extricate the trapped passengers.

Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The 22 injured individuals, many in critical condition, were rushed to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital for urgent medical care. Health authorities have since confirmed that they are receiving treatment and are under close observation.

While the exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined, the Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation to establish what led to the fatal accident. Preliminary observations suggest that high speed, poor visibility, or mechanical failure may have been contributing factors, though this remains unconfirmed.

Commander Samuel Mante used the opportunity to caution all road users, especially long-distance commercial drivers, to remain vigilant and adhere to road safety protocols. He also emphasized the need for regular vehicle maintenance to avoid preventable mechanical failures.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of the busy Accra-Kumasi highway, a key transportation route prone to high traffic volumes and frequent accidents. Authorities are working to notify the families of the victims and provide necessary support.

As investigations continue, the public is urged to cooperate with emergency and security personnel and prioritize safety on the roads. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and other stakeholders are expected to intensify public education campaigns on safe driving practices in response to the accident.
