Boxing Legend Azumah Nelson Receives Toyota Fortuner from Ibrahim Mahama

Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama recently honoured boxing legend Azumah Nelson with a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and a generous cash gift in a heartfelt tribute to the iconic athlete’s lasting legacy.
The surprise presentation happened on June 16, 2025, at Ibrahim Mahama’s office, shortly after a courtesy visit by a special delegation. The group included Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Dramani Mahama and CEO of Legacy Rise Sports, as well as British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. This visit followed their participation in the high-profile Battle of the Beasts boxing event held at the Bukom Boxing Arena on June 13.
Before heading to Ibrahim Mahama’s office, the delegation also paid a visit to President Mahama at Jubilee House. Their purpose was to express gratitude for the ongoing support towards boxing and sports development in Ghana.
During the presentation, Ibrahim Mahama described Azumah Nelson as “arguably Africa’s greatest boxer,” highlighting that the gift was a way to celebrate not only his remarkable achievements as a three-time world champion but also his dedication to youth development and sports mentorship in Ghana. The emotional moment saw Mahama hand over the car keys to Nelson in front of friends, dignitaries, and supporters.
A visibly moved Azumah Nelson expressed deep gratitude, saying, “I am grateful to you, Ibrahim Mahama, and to Sharaf Mahama for this big surprise. I didn’t expect this at all. I am just supporting my son Sharaf who has shown great interest in promoting the sport I love.”
Nelson’s influence remains strong as he continues inspiring younger generations and supporting boxing initiatives across Ghana. His legacy transcends the boxing ring, making him a respected figure in the nation’s sports and youth development scene.
The event was also attended by members of Anthony Joshua’s team, sports entrepreneur Yaw Sakyi Afari of RITE Sports Services, Henry Quarshie — a businessman and close associate of Azumah Nelson — alongside several friends from Legacy Rise Sports and Ibrahim Mahama’s circle.
Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners and Dzata Cement Limited, is well-known for his philanthropic work in education, sports, and infrastructure development. His generous support helps nurture talent and raise Ghana’s profile on the global sports stage.
The recent Battle of the Beasts event not only captivated audiences worldwide thanks to Anthony Joshua’s involvement but also highlighted Ghana’s rich boxing heritage and ongoing efforts to showcase the country’s sporting excellence internationally.
