Black Queens Coach Hails Team After Thrilling 4-2 Comeback Win Over Benin in WAFCON Preparations
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has lauded his team’s fighting spirit and growing confidence following their impressive 4-2 comeback victory over Benin on Wednesday night. The match, held as part of the team’s build-up to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marked Ghana’s second consecutive win in their pre-tournament friendlies.
The senior women’s national team is enjoying a fine run of form, having already defeated Malawi 3-1 last Saturday. These back-to-back wins highlight the Black Queens’ growing momentum as they prepare for the prestigious continental tournament scheduled to begin in July.
Speaking after the game, Coach Bjorkegren praised the team’s strong finish and the resilience they showed after falling behind.
“It was a good game. Great second half. I think we were struggling a little bit in the middle of the first half,” the Swedish coach admitted.
“But when we took the ball down and started to play football, we were absolutely the better team. We scored four goals and even had more chances. I’m happy the attack is starting to look better and better.”
Bjorkegren also expressed satisfaction with his team’s improving attacking output.
“We have scored seven goals now in two games,” he noted, emphasizing the attacking transformation taking place under his guidance.
The Black Queens will conclude their series of warm-up matches with a high-stakes encounter against regional rivals Nigeria on Saturday, June 28. The match is expected to test the readiness of both teams ahead of the tournament.
Ghana has been placed in Group C of the 2024 WAFCON, alongside defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali. The Black Queens are scheduled to begin their tournament campaign on July 5, with hopes of capturing their first-ever WAFCON title in what will be their 13th appearance at the competition.
With the team showing promise and building confidence through successive wins, expectations are high that the Black Queens will make a strong statement in Morocco and finally clinch the long-awaited continental crown.
