Diaso Anti-Galamsey Operation: Police Arrest 3, Seize Excavator and Firearm

Police Anti-Galamsey Task Force Arrests 3, Seizes Equipment in Central Region Mining Crackdown

The Ghana Police Service, through its Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force, has made significant progress in the fight against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, with the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of mining equipment during two separate operations in the Central Region.

The coordinated operations were carried out on Friday, 20th June 2025, at Nikanika and Adeade, two known illegal mining hotspots. These efforts form part of the ongoing nationwide campaign to clamp down on illegal mining activities that continue to threaten Ghana’s environment and water bodies.

At the Nikanika site, the task force conducted a surprise raid. Although no illegal miners were present at the time, officers recovered critical items from the scene, including one single-barrel shotgun loaded with a cartridge and three water pumping machines used in illegal mining operations.

In a related operation at Adeade, the Anti-Galamsey Task Force successfully apprehended three suspects: Prosper Quansah, Chrispin Nartey, and Owusu Gambra. The individuals were intercepted with a SANY excavator mounted on a lowbed trailer, indicating possible movement of equipment to another unauthorized mining location.

Additional items seized at the Adeade site included four unregistered Haojin motorbikes and a lowbed vehicle with registration number GN 2136-24. These vehicles are often used to transport illegal mining equipment across regions undetected.

The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. All seized equipment and items have been secured by the authorities for further examination and legal processing.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating illegal mining across the country and has urged the public to support the effort by reporting suspicious mining activities in their communities.
