Pregnant BECE Student Delivers Baby Amid ICT Exam in Ashanti Region

In an extraordinary incident during this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), a pregnant candidate gave birth at the Asenua Presbyterian Junior High School examination center in the Ashanti Region. The young student reportedly went into labor while writing the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) paper, which was the second examination of the day.

According to an eyewitness, Osomafo Kwasi Adjei, a policewoman escorting the student to the washroom noticed signs of distress. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the officer quickly informed the examination authorities. The officials at the center responded promptly and moved the student to a nearby office where she could receive help.

Some elderly women in the community stepped in to assist with the delivery. Their swift response helped ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby. After the delivery, the student and her newborn were taken to a nearby private health facility for medical care. Reports indicate that both are in stable condition and receiving the necessary attention.

Further investigation revealed that the student had been absent from school for several weeks prior to the start of the examinations. Despite her absence, the headteacher of her school reached out and encouraged her to return and participate in the exams. Thanks to these efforts, she was present on the exam day and demonstrated determination to complete her education, even under challenging circumstances.

This remarkable event has drawn attention across the region and beyond. It brings to light the unique challenges faced by young mothers who are still in school, while also showing the strength and resilience they can exhibit in the face of adversity. The compassion shown by community members and examination officials played a crucial role in ensuring a safe outcome.

The story also highlights the importance of continued support for young girls in school who may face personal or health-related challenges. The swift action of those present at the exam center helped to prevent what could have been a much more difficult situation. Many are now calling for increased awareness and better support systems for students in similar circumstances to help them continue their education without stigma or interruption.

As both mother and baby recover, the hope remains that she will be given every opportunity to continue her education and secure a bright future for herself and her child.
