2023 AFCON: Medeama Goalkeeper Reveals Why Richard Ofori Was Favored Over Him

Medeama SC Goalkeeper Felix Kyei Reveals Why He Missed Out on Ghana’s 2023 AFCON Squad
Medeama SC’s promising goalkeeper Felix Kyei has opened up about the reasons behind his omission from Ghana’s final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite his strong performances in the Ghana Premier League.
Kyei, who has been widely praised as one of the most talented young goalkeepers in the domestic league, was originally named on the Black Stars’ standby list for the tournament held in Ivory Coast. However, he did not make the final cut when the official 26-man squad was announced.
Speaking in an interview with Medeama FM, Kyei revealed that then-Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton personally informed him of the decision. According to Kyei, Hughton praised his form but explained that the technical team had opted for more experienced options, particularly Richard Ofori, due to his leadership qualities and international experience.
“We were preparing to leave for Ivory Coast for AFCON, and at the same time, I had a league match in Tamale with Medeama,” Kyei said. “I received a call from Coach Chris Hughton. He commended my performance and told me to keep working hard. He explained that I was on the standby list and would be called up if any unforeseen circumstances occurred.”
Kyei went on to share that Hughton had considered dropping Richard Ofori, who had seen limited playing time at Orlando Pirates, but was persuaded to keep him in the squad due to his experience and influence in the dressing room.
“Hughton was honest with me. He said if there were a goalkeeper he would consider dropping, it would be Ofori. But because of his leadership and to help him regain his confidence and possibly use the tournament as a platform to find a new club, the technical team felt it was best to include him,” Kyei explained.
Although disappointed, the 24-year-old goalkeeper took the news in stride and maintained a positive attitude.
“It was around Christmas, and Coach Hughton wished me well. I told him I had no issues with his decision—he’s the head coach and has the final say. These things happen in football, especially when it comes to national team selection,” he added.
Ghana’s campaign at AFCON 2023 ended in disappointment, as the team failed to progress past the group stage. The poor showing led to the dismissal of Chris Hughton as head coach. Notably, since the tournament, Richard Ofori has not received another call-up to the national team, raising questions about the selection decisions made ahead of the competition.
Despite missing the opportunity to represent Ghana at AFCON, Felix Kyei remains one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in the country. His calm demeanor, professionalism, and resilience suggest he could still play a significant role in the future of Ghanaian football.
